Setting intentions for the new year

By The Studio

I love the phrase start as you mean to go on, you can apply it to work, relationships, anything new. So what perfect time tp apply it than the new year. Studies show that it takes 21 days to make something a habit and creating new habits for the new years is an amazing way to make sure you are going in the right direction.

Firstly setting intentions and setting intentions with a plan to execute are two very different things. It’s amazing to write a list of new years resolutions but without at least a bit of a plan to execute them it can be very hard to stick to and easy to fall off the wagon.

Here is a step by step guide to setting intentions and making them stick.

Firstly don’t scramble on NYE to just write anything down as a new years resolution or scramble in your head when someone asks you and you’ve realised you didn’t think about it yet. Take time to take stock of this year and think about what you need for next year. If you’ve been journalling at all this year take some time to read back through the highlights and think about the most important lessons you have learnt. Write down your intentions but also write down why you want to change these parts of your life.

Be as specific as you can and try to also think of ways to achieve each one. If your new years resolution is getting healthy for instance try think of three ways you can achieve this and write them down also. This way you can refer back to your resolutions and have some pointers as how to get there.

Don’t be too unrealistic! Setting unrealistic goals will only be demotivating in the future. Also don’t overload yourself, having too many may feel overwhelming. I like to plan around the angel number 444. 3 resolutions with 3 ways to achieve them for each.

Not everyone will like this one but this pointer is a need for me personally because I need to be made accountable. A problem shared is a problem halved. I like to tell my close friends what Im up to, one so i’m accountable and two because my pride will stop me breaking my own rules in front of them!

Lastly don’t forget to be your own biggest fan. Many of us humans are so hard on ourselves, don’t beat yourself up if you fall of the wagon, we all do it. Difference is how you handle it. If you find yourself slipping take yourself back to what you wrote down as to why you want to change these parts of your life and remind yourself of the intention of your goal.

Wishing you all the best this holiday season and I hope 2022 is your best year yet!
