Benefits of Feng Shui

By LiveWell Community

Feng Shui in our homes brings a sense of peace and wellbeing with the natural world.  The goal is to harness forces of energy to establish harmony and bring peace to a person and their surroundings.  Feng Shui literally translates to 'wind' and 'water' and the principles of Feng Shui reflect nature.  So how can we use this ancient Chinese practice in our homes to help create our own sanctuary of calm

The Basic Principles of Feng Shui

The Commanding Position

In Feng Shui, the Commanding Position is the space in the room where you will spend the most time.  It should be furthest from the door and not in direct alignment with it.  But still maintaining a clear line of sight with it, ideally on a diagonal.  When you have decided on the Commanding Position, this is where you should place your bed, your sofa, your cooker, or other main feature of the room.  The rest of the furniture will be in placement around your Commanding Position.

The Feng Shui Bagua Map

The Bagua Map is the 'imaginary floor plan' of your space.  What we use to visualise our surroundings and how we want them.  The word 'Bagua' translates to meaning 'the eight areas'.  These eight areas correspond to different areas of your life.  The ninth area is You, and is represented by overall health and wellbeing.  Each of these areas are represented by different shapes, colours, seasons, numbers and the earthly elements.  The Bagua's can be used in different ways to organise your home.

The eight Bagua areas are;

Wealth (Xun)

Meaning: Wealth, Abundance, Prosperity

Shape: Rectangle

Colour: Purple

Season: Spring

The best way to incorporate the Bagua's into your life is by selecting a couple of areas you think you need to work on the most.  To improve the flow of energy in these areas, you can use the Feng Shui suggestions from that particular area.  For example, if you wish to improve your health, placing a brown, square table in the room will help to boost the energy of that Bagua.  Incorporating that shape and colour.

The Five Elements

The Five Elements Earth, Water, Fire, Metal and Wood are used in Feng Shui to bring balance to the areas of the life or Baguas.  Again choosing the energies you wish to work on, you choose elements from those areas to incorporate into your home.
