Fitness trend alert: Rope Jump!

A firm favourite with the Kardashians (and let’s face it, whether you like them or not, their bodies are quite enviable), is the skipping rope and jumping! According to personal trainers, skipping over a rope and jumping burns more calories than running and swimming in a shorter amount of time. A win win if you ask me, as all it takes is 10 minutes of jumping per day. Surely this can’t be true?

Jumping or skipping over the rope strengthens your arms, calves and core, meaning it really is a full body work out. Who needs HIIT when all you need is a rope? An easy, no fuss workout sitting in the palm of your hands. You can even do it from the comfort of your own home. If you’re fully invested in this exercise, you can treat yourself to a SmartRope. SmartRope is an LED-embedded jump rope that displays your fitness data in mid-air, as you work out and connects to an app on your phone. The app allows you to track calories, how many jumps you have done, the time it takes you to jump, and you can even set yourself jump targets! Jumping is much harder than it looks and after approximately 5 minutes you will be wishing you never started!

Start off by stretching your entire body to warm up. For the first session, just focus on jumping and getting your routine on point, you will need to get your body used to using new muscles. Here’s the part where I remind you to make a new playlist – nothing slow – this playlist needs to be upbeat and motivating to get you moving. Start to intensify the jumps in the next session. Jump higher and for longer, keep building yourself up to 5 minutes straight. Once 5 minutes without stopping feels like a breeze, start to incorporate more exercises into your routine. Jump for 5 minutes, put the rope down and work on the matt. 25 press ups, 50 sit ups then go again for another 5 minutes without stopping. Keep following this routine until you feel like it’s getting a little easier. Once you reach that point, again, increase the work out you do. After all, you’re only cheating yourselves by not pushing your body to it’s full potential. Extend the jumping time to 7 minutes, 25 press ups, 50 sit ups, then a further 7 minutes of jumping. Repeat the exercise 3 times, and I assure you, you will be sweating from within.
